Racine Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Will a rodent in the attic have a nest of babies?
Rodents are creatures from the mammal class with prominent front incisors that never stop growing. They use these not only for food, but to chew holes to make them larger, which is sometimes how they can gain access to the attic. They also chew on material such as insulation, cloth, paper and wood, to make nests. The sole purpose of rodents entering attics are for living. They prefer the warmth and the safety it provides so that they can nest. If you have rodents in your attic, then yes, eventually there will be a nest.
Mice:
Rodents such as mice and rats give birth up to 10 times a year and their litter can range from 7 to 14 babies. They use leaves, debris, cloth, and other items to make their nests. Finding a nest of babies may be difficult. Luckily though, they would not survive without their mother, so if you want to get rid of a nest, annihilate the adult rodents. These rodents would usually leave at night to scurry for food so you may hear them scampering about at this time. They carry a plethora of diseases and having them in your attic is dangerous for your health.
Squirrels:
Squirrels also fall within the rodent category. These give birth twice a year, during winter in late January and during the summer in early August. Their litter usually range between 2 to 8 babies and the babies can take up to 2 months before they start moving about. Squirrels survive for 2 to 10 years but begin mating after 1 year. If a squirrel goes to an attic, then it is most likely looking for a place to give birth and nest its babies. Once the rodent senses that the attic is a safe-haven, it would always return. However, these creatures are a hazard to keep because it gnaws away at electrical wiring that can eventually cause fires, as well as on wood which creates bigger holes in your roof. Squirrels are very active and can be heard throughout the day, usually though, in the early morning or at dusk, which are the times they are most active.
Hearing noise coming from the attic, is an indicative factor that there are rodents there. Further investigation for poop droppings can help you decipher which rodent has taken shelter. There are other non-rodent creatures such as raccoons and opossums, even bats, that live in attics because it provides a safe environment for them to nest. These creatures can carry diseases and can destroy your property, so every effort should be made to circumvent them from entering. All they need is a small gap, ½ an inch or the size of a quarter, from which they can enter. It is imperative to have your house examined every year for holes and gaps and have these repaired as quickly as possible. Having to deal with a rodent in the attic is not only unhealthy, it also means that there are a nest babies.
